Women’s hoops takes on A-Sun leader FGCU Saturday
Streaks are made to be broken is a statement the Jacksonville University women’s basketball team will try to make true Saturday when it hosts A-Sun leader Florida Gulf Coast in Swisher Gymnasium at 1 p.m.
The Dolphins (7-13, 3-6) look to break a current three-game losing streak as they play first-place Eagles (16-5, 9-0) who have won their last 27 games in A-Sun play dating back to 2010.
“We are working hard this week to regroup,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “Our main focus is to be playing our best basketball down the stretch.”
On Monday, the Dolphins started slow for the third straight game for a 74-57 loss against East Tennessee State in the ETSU/MSHA Center. In the last seven games, the Dolphins have allowed at least 40 points in the first half six times for a 1-6 mark.
Senior Tracie Sneed has been a bright spot for the Dolphins lately after posting at least nine points and five boards in four of the last six games. Against ETSU, Sneed went 8-for-8 at the free throw line en route to a team-high 14 points. She now leads the squad and is 10th in the A-Sun with an 11.4 scoring average.
Junior Stephanie Edwards scored in double-digits in both game last weekend, including recording 14 points at USC Upstate (1/26).
The Eagles beat Stetson, 74-55, Saturday in a rematch of the 2012 A-Sun Championship game at Alico Arena. FGCU has won the last 10 in a row and 12 of its last 13 games overall.
Sarah Hansen (16.8), Brittany Kennedy (10.6) and Joyce Iamstrong (10.1) are the top three scorers for the FGCU offense. Hansen is still first in rebounds (8.2) and blocks (13), while Kennedy has a team-high 112 assists.
In the first meeting on Jan. 5, three different Eagles’ players scored in double figures to lead FGCU to a 74-57 win over JU. Hansen had 20 points, while Kennedy scored 19 and Adams totaled 12 points to help the cause.
The Eagles have won the last 10 contests against JU since losing the first-ever meeting, 62-58, in Jacksonville on Jan. 5, 2008. Two seasons ago, the Dolphins lost 10 straight to ETSU before snapping it with a 75-65 victory in the 2011 A-Sun semifinals.
