Dolphins Capture Seventh Straight Title

SARASOTA, Fla.—The JU men’s rowing team won its seventh straight state championship Saturday at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association regatta.  The men’s and women’s teams combined to win the overall title as well for the sixth time in the last seven years.

The men’s team defended its title in dominating fashion winning five races overall.

The men’s Varsity 8 led off the finals competition on Saturday with a win posting a time of 6:38.4 to beat the competition by nearly 10 seconds.

The men’s Junior Varsity 8 followed with a win, beating out Florida and Georgia Tech with a winning time of 6:48.5.

The men’s Freshman 8 bested the field by 12 seconds winning with a time of 6:43.8.

The Junior Varsity men’s 4 won its final in a time of 7:20.1.  The Freshman 4 also won, finishing in 7:17.8. 

With the five victories and other subsequent finishes, the men’s team captured the title with 120 points.  They beat the second place finisher Rollins by 74 points.

The women’s team had a strong showing as well winning one race and finishing in second in another.

The Freshman 4 took the state title in a time of 8:54.8.  They edged out second place Florida State by 3.9 seconds.

The Freshman 8 finished second behind Florida in a time of 7:53.5.

The Varsity 8 came in fourth place with a time of 7:55.6.

With the men’s and women’s scores combined, the Dolphins took the overall combined title with 165 points. 

Both the men’s and women’s teams will look to build on their titles as they move on to Oak Ridge, Tenn. for the SIRA regatta on April 20.
