Late heroics end marathon match

The Jacksonville University women’s soccer defeated FAU 1-0 at the end of the double overtime after the game had been delayed two hours due to inclement weather.  Freshman Marie Weckhurst scored her first ever goal wearing a Dolphin uniform giving JU the win in its first game of the season.

JU dominated the game statistically outperforming the Owls in every major category but could not get the elusive first goal of the game until almost two full overtime periods had been played.  The Dolphins outshot the Owls 17 to 11 including eight shots on goal compared to FAU’s three.  JU had a major advantage in the number of set pieces taken as they took nine more corner kicks than FAU but just could not convert.

It took 108 minutes before the first goal of the game was scored.  Weckhurst, playing in her first career game, made her only shot of the game count.  She converted from the left side of the box by flicking the ball up over the keeper to the right side of the net for the sudden death game winner.

“It was a great effort by the girls tonight,” said head coach Brian Copham.  “I’m proud of the way we came out after such a long delay.  I was pleased with a lot of our attack and the way we kept pushing to finally get the goal and the win.”

Weckhurst’s older sister Raquel led the way for JU with four shots including a team high two shots on goal.  Freshman goal keeper Jill D’Amico posted a clean sheet in her first ever game including three saves.

The Dolphins will stay in southern Florida to take on Florida International on Sunday at 4:00 pm.
