Jacksonville downed by South Carolina on the road

The Jacksonville University women’s soccer team was defeated 3-0 by the University of South Carolina on Sunday afternoon in Columbia, SC.

The Gamecocks kept the pressure on outshooting JU 16-7 and used a two goal performance from Coryn Bajema to best the Dolphins.

Bajema started the scoring off early for the Gamecocks scoring form distance as her shot from 30 yards out went over the head of Dolphin goal keeper Jill D’Amico in the 7th minute of the contest.  20 minutes later Bajema was in the right place at the right time as she was able to corral a rebound and find the back of the net increasing the lead to 2-0.

South Carolina would go on to add another goal early in the second half to bring the final score to 3-0.

Although the game did not go in their favor, there were many positives to take away.

“I was proud of our effort today,” said Dolphin head coach Brian Copham. “I thought we came out and did good job of keeping the ball.  They took advantage of our miscue early on and left us fighting out of a hole.  Even though we could not get a goal we kept trying and didn’t give up.”

A perennial SEC power, the experience of playing against a top level opponent in the Gamecocks should pay dividends later on the in the season.

“South Carolina is a very good team,” said Copham.  “Hopefully this experience will prepare us for conference play.”

The Dolphins (1-2-0) return to the field for their home opener on Friday, August 31 against Navy.
