An RBI single from junior Karson Tuck helped the Jacksonville University softball team beat host Florida Atlantic, 3-2, in eight innings Saturday at the FAU Classic.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Tuck singled through the right side to score junior Jacey Warner for the Dolphins’ (12-5) go-ahead score. Tuck also combined with freshman Emily Sanchez on a defensive stop for the final out in the bottom of the frame to outlast the Owls (6-14) in the end.

“These were two great wins for us tonight,” JU head coach Ali Higgs. “Our entire team played well and rose to occasion. We look forward to building on this momentum tomorrow for a chance to end this weekend on a high note.”

Tuck finished the game going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while sophomore Ashley Simon added a home run in the win.

Freshman Cecile Gomez (5-0) allowed a hit in 2.1 scoreless relief frames for the win in the circle. She also pitched 1.2 scoreless frames earlier in the day to earn the save in JU’s 5-2 win against Michigan State.

With the scored tied at two in the top of the eighth inning, Warner was placed on second for the intentional tie-breaker rule. Warner moved to third on sacrifice bunt, but FAU reliever and eventual losing pitcher Taylor Fawbush kept her at third with a ground out. After Fawbush hit a batter, Tuck scored Warner with a single for the 3-2 lead. Fawbush hit another batter to load the bases, but bounced back with a strikeout out to end the inning.

Sarah Howell was placed on second for the Owls to start the eighth inning. Gomez got two line outs before allowing a hit up the middle to Laura Mann. Tuck made a diving stop, but delivered a low throw to first. Sanchez corralled the throw in time for the out to secure JU’s extra-innings win.

Fawbush (2-6) struck out three and scattered two hits in four innings for the loss.

The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Tuck single to score sophomore Jackie DiPiazza who pinch ran for senior Sarah Simon after her leadoff double.

Stephanie Call homered for the Owls in the third inning, but Ashley Simon had a solo shot of her own in the fourth inning to help JU regain the lead.

With an out in the sixth inning, JU starter Dale Tillman allowed a one-out single to Carlesha Thompson. Tillman got a fly out in the next at-bat, but allowed a Mann double to score Thompson to tie the game. After a walk, Gomez came in and retired the seven of the next eight hitters to set up the win.

The Dolphins finish the classic Sunday against Ball State at 9 a.m. Fans can follow the game through live stats at JUDolphins.com.
