Dolphins Look to Rebound at FGCU

The JU softball team will look to bounce back to its winning ways after struggling earlier in the week as it travels to Fort Meyers, Fla. to take on Florida Gulf Coast for a three-game series starting Saturday.

The Dolphins (30-12, 11-5 A-Sun) had their nine-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday when they were swept by A-Sun foe Stetson in a doubleheader.  The offense that had powered the Dolphins to the nine consecutive wins and much of the season was absent as the team combined for just seven hits and two runs in the two games.

Despite the dropping the two conference games, JU still sits alone in second place in the conference standings trailing only the nationally ranked USC Upstate Spartans.

JU ranks near the top of the conference in almost every offensive statistic including leading the league in home runs with 44.  Senior catcher Sarah Simon leads the team with a .381 average, 34 RBI, and 14 home runs.

The Eagles (27-15, 8-6 A-Sun) are the defending conference regular season and tournament champions but come into the weekend also having dropped its last two games, both on the road to Kennesaw State.

Leading the offensive charge for the Eagles is junior catcher Chelsea Zgrabik.  She is batting .325 on the season with 14 home runs and an impressive 51 RBI.

The two teams met three times last season with FGCU winning them all.  JU however held a lead going into the final half inning of play in every one of those games.

Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Sunday’s single game is set for 1 p.m.
