Freshman Sammie Strausbaugh and junior Kylie Jacob each had solid nights to help the JU volleyball team to a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-20, 25-17) over Stetson Tuesday in A-Sun action at Swisher Gymnasium.

Strausbaugh paced the Dolphins offense (5-20, 3-9 A-Sun) with 13 kills, while Jacob tallied 11 kills and five blocks. Jacob has had at least seven kills and four blocks in six of the last seven matches.

JU also hit better than .300 in the first two sets to snap its four-game skid. The Hatters (4-25, 0-12) were held to a .031 hitting percentage (23-20-98) for the night.

“This was a good team effort,” JU head coach Michelle Collier said. “Everyone came ready to play and executed well. Hopefully, this win is something we can build on for this weekend.”

Sophomore Taylor Nyquist added nine kills and 10 digs in the win, while Cailyn Prewitt had five kills for the Hatters.

In the first set, three Stetson errors helped JU take a 12-8 advantage. The Hatters closed the gap to 14-13 on a kill by Ellen Hawks. Jacob followed with a kill to start an 8-3 stretch to extend JU’s lead to 22-16. An ace from senior Alison Loeppky and a Jacob kill wrapped the set for JU.

In the second set, the Dolphins gained a 9-7 lead on a Nyquist kill. Two JU errors helped Stetson cut the deficit to 13-11, but Nyquist pushed the lead back to 17-12 with another kill. After a Stetson timeout, the Hatters found a spark by making it a 21-19 deficit from an ace. The Hatters gained the next point, but an attack error opened the door for JU’s final four points to win the set.

In the third set, JU used a 5-2 run, capped on a Strausbaugh kill, for a 12-8 lead. The Hatters cut the deficit to three, but a block by Strausbaugh and Loeppky finished a 10-3 run for a 23-13 advantage. Stetson grabbed four of the next five points before Courtney wrapped the match with a kill to secure the JU victory.

The Dolphins begin a key four-match A-Sun road trip Friday against Mercer in Macon, Ga. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
