Jacksonville shows great progress with APR scores
The Jacksonville University athletics program has shown its ability to win championships on the field, but also focuses on the student-athletes education as well as 19 JU varsity sports posted an Academic Progress Rate (APR) over 900.
JU had 19 of its 20 squads scored better than the 900 minimum following a four-year submitted data from 2007-08 through 2010-11. JU had 14 teams score more than 960, while six squads were in the 980 range.
The NCAA increases the minimum score to 930 for the 2013-14 academic year, with 17 Jacksonville teams already meeting the criteria. The two lone teams, football and men’s lacrosse, are on track to have score within the coming year before the new mandate takes effect.
“All of our coaches and staff are committed to graduating their student-athletes and our progress in the APR scores shows that commitment,” JU Interim Director of Athletics Joel Lamp said. “We continue to have some work to do in certain sports, but they have put in place measures to get their score over the 930 threshold.”
JU earned APR Public Recognition honors for the indoor (997) and outdoor (997) track & field teams who tallied near perfect scores to finish in the top 10 percentile.
Track & field’s APR score has been helped by the Dolphins impressive streak of 10 straight years on the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) all-academic team. The streak predates the Dolphins current seven straight A-Sun indoor and outdoor title sweeps. They also earned the athletic department top GPA award honor at this year’s all-sports banquet.
“Jacksonville University has created a unique environment that offers a great package of culture, support and athletic success,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “The student-athletes in our program take advantage of the resources provided by the athletic department, the university and the city of Jacksonville. We hope that these measurable statistics are indicative of not only student-athlete success but of their happiness as well.”
The APR measures how scholarship student-athletes are performing term by term throughout the school year. It is a composite team measurement based upon retention and how individual team members do academically.
