Women’s Golf Concludes Fall Season at FIU Pat Bradley Invitational
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women’s golf team was in seventh after the first day of competition at the JU Classic earlier this week, but never got the chance to rise higher in the standings as the final 18 holes of play were washed away due to unplayable conditions around the course. Now, the same five Dolphins who competed on Monday will head out to the links again this weekend, beginning play at the 36th Annual Pat Bradley Invitational on Sunday morning. The 54-hole event will be played over three days, with the tournament concluding on Tuesday.
Jacksonville will be represented this week by seniors Carlie Gehlhausen and Francesca Yong, as well as juniors Morgan Matchett, Natalie Schmett and Jessica Welch. The five of them will be tested by the Cypress Links course at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. A lengthy par 72 course that plays out over 6,288 yards, Jacksonville finished eighth in the event last season and were led by Schmett (77-77-76) and Welch (75-79-76), who each finished in a tie for 24th place overall.
As usual, a strong field awaits Jacksonville at the event. In addition to FIU – which has won the last two years of this tournament – major programs such as Maryland and Missouri also fill out the 17-team list. JU will also compete with Florida Gulf Coast for the first time this season.
“We are looking forward to returning to the Lakewood Ranch and improving upon our finish last year,” said Head Coach Jennifer Borocz. “The team was looking to get a little redemption on Tuesday at Marsh Landing and they didn't get to do that, so we are going to carry that with us down there. This is our last event of the fall season and we’re looking to finish off strong.”
Following this tournament, women’s golf returns to competition in mid-February when Jacksonville hosts the Amelia Island Collegiate on Feb. 17-18. That tournament is the first of three JU-hosted events in the spring, concluding with the Atlantic Sun Golf Championship from Apr. 14-16 at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.
