Women’s Golf Wraps Amelia Island Collegiate in Fourth
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – Though the Jacksonville University women’s golf team couldn’t match its outstanding second round score in Tuesday’s third and final round, the Dolphins still ended their first tournament of the spring season with a strong fourth place finish at the inaugural Amelia Island Collegiate at the Amelia National Golf Club. Jessica Welch fired an even-par 72 to finish in a tie for seventh place, the highest JU individual of the event.
Teeing off in the final groups, Welch began her round with five consecutive pars before recording a pair of birdies on the sixth and seventh. Though she gave a stroke back on the par-four eighth, she immediately eagled the par-five ninth to end her front nine at three-under. Her play remained solid on the back-nine, but a double bogey on the par-three 12th hold proved costly as she ended at even par and shot a +3 for the tournament.
Natalie Schmett shot a 38 on both the front and back nines to end with a 76 and as the second finisher for Jacksonville. Her three-round total of 224 put her in a tie for 16th place. Morgan Matchett shot a 79 to place in a tie for 27th.
Carlie Gehlhausen was the fourth scorer for the Dolphins on the round. The senior shot a 39 on both the front and the back for a six-over 78. Freshman Sabrina Rumbaugh struggled a day after firing her first collegiate round in the 60s. A double-bogey on the first hole set the tone as she shot an 85 and ended in a tie for 35th.
Florida International came into today’s final round with a large lead and held on for a 12-stroke victory over Kennesaw State with a team score of 859. Daytona State finished in third at 890. Individually, medalist honors came down to FIU’s Camila Serrano and Daytona State’s Tiffany Chan. After each ended at -8 at the conclusion of the third round, it took four play-off holes before Serrano got up and down for a par and Chan three-putted for a bogey to give FIU a sweep of team and individual honors.
Jacksonville returns to action in three weeks at the UNF Invitational, hosted by the Ospreys at the Jacksonville Golf & Country Club on March 10 and 11.
