Welch Shares the Individual Lead after First Day of A-Sun Women’s Golf Championship
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Junior Jessica Welch finds herself in a familiar position after the opening 18 holes of the Atlantic Sun Women’s Golf Championship at Pine Lakes Golf Course. For the second year running, she finds herself in a tie for the overall lead following the first round of the championship after firing a one-under round of 71, pacing the Dolphins on the day as the team ended the round in a tie for sixth place in the 10-team event.
Welch ended her front nine at +2 after carding bogeys on Nos. 7 and 9, but came alive on the back side, getting back to one-over with a birdie on the par-5 11th hole, then birdieing the difficult two par-3s coming in at the 14th and 17th. Welch and Kaew Preamchuen of Kennesaw State were the only two players to go lower than par in the first round. Welch will be paired with Stetson’s Jenna Hoecker in tomorrow’s round, who shot an even-par 72.
Jacksonville’s second scorer was Natalie Schmett, who shot a 77 and is in a tie for 21st overall after her first round. Morgan Matchett is tied for 30th after an opening 78 and freshmen Megan Collins and Sabrina Rumbaugh shot matching rounds of 81.
The overall team lead goes to Mercer after the completion of the first 18 holes. The Bears were led by Lacey Fears’ round of 72 and carded a score of 294 (+6) to hold a three-stroke lead over Kennesaw State. East Tennessee State led throughout much of the first round but faltered down the stretch and ended at 300 (+12).
The middle of the standings are very tight, with North Florida in fourth place at 305 (+17), a stroke ahead of Northern Kentucky, and two ahead of JU and Stetson. Florida Gulf Coast sits in eighth place at 308 (+20). Lipscomb (+24) and USC Upstate (+29) round out the standings.
With poor weather expected in the area tomorrow, the format of the second round is changing. Instead of each team teeing off on No. 1 as they did today, teams will begin off both the front and back nine. JU will be paired with Stetson and tee off on No. 10 beginning at 8 a.m.
