JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The third contest was the charm as the Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season in a 20-13 thumping over Colorado on Saturday afternoon. Attackers Morgan Derner and Taylor McCord each recorded five goals in the contest while Ali Hoffman contributed four.
“It was great to come up with our first win of the season,” said Head Coach Mindy McCord. “Our attack had strong teamwork with lots of contributors. We will use this win to continue to build momentum into the week.”
Also posting a multi-score game was sophomore midfielder Kelsey Wiglesworth who netted two goals to go alongside two assists. She also led JU’s defensive efforts with six draw controls. Senior attacker Britt Orashen also had a noteworthy performance as she played well on both sides of the ball with a goal, an assist and a game-high four caused turnovers.
Three Buffs finished with two goals but Marie Moore and Katie Macleay lead the team on a pair of hat tricks. In the net, keeper Paige Soenksen recorded 15 saves.
Tying four ties in the first 20 minutes of the game, it wasn’t until the 10 minute mark of the first half that the Dolphins seized control of the scoreboard. With ten seconds left in the period, Derner ripped in a free-position shot to give the Fins a slight 10-6 lead at the break.
A strong offensive showing leading to three unanswered goals to start the second half, two by Hoffman, built JU a 13-6 advantage less than three minutes in. There was no lack of scoring from either side as the teams went in offensive spurts to close the game. Instead of trading a single goal, they traded 2-0 and 3-0 runs.
In the end, JU suffocated the Buffs scoring opportunities while knocking in a pair of their own to crown the victory.
For the second game in a row, goalkeeper Asia Moore, in her first collegiate win, recorded 10 saves.
Next up, James Madison rolls into town on Saturday, Feb. 22, for an 11 a.m. matchup.
