Softball Earns Third Straight Win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University softball pushed its win column to eight on Thursday night, beating Mount St. Mary’s 6-1 at the JU Softball Complex.

The Fins (8-5) garnered six runs on six hits and tallied six RBI. They recorded two runs in the bottom of the first, two in the second, one in the third and one in the fifth.

Codi Kelly started the scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI double to center, plating Victoria Brown who reached on an error by the Mount’s first baseman. Kelly then scored the second run on Emily Sanchez’s RBI grounder to short, scoring from third after advancing on a wild pitch.

In total, six different Dolphins scored: Brown, Kelly, Charli Bradshaw, Sable Lee, Miranda Fleming and Jackie DiPiazza. Kelly led offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.

On the mound, freshman Jessi Walker earned her first win (1-1), tossing 2.1 innings and allowing Mount St. Mary’s only run of the game in the top of the third. Holly Buckel singled, advanced to second on an error, then third on a fielder’s choice, and scored on a wild pitch.

Two batters later, Taylor Rossman came in for relief for Walker, striking out seven, walking three and allowing only two hits. Rossman earned a JU season-best seven strikeouts, topping her previous season-best of five strikeouts at FIU.

Sam Lichtner (1-2) took the loss for Mount St. Mary’s. Lichtner allowed three hits, four runs, three earned and three walks. Nicole Pagano relieved her for the final 4.0 innings, fanning six, walking one, allowing one earned run on two and three hits.

Next, Jacksonville will begin Atlantic Sun play this weekend, visiting the No. 1 team in the conference, USC Upstate, March 1-2.
