Softball Opens A-Sun Play at USC Upstate
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Riding a three-game win streak, Jacksonville University softball (8-5) is heading into Atlantic Sun play this weekend for a three-game series at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C.
Jacksonville most recently defeated Mount St. Mary’s 6-1 on Thursday evening for its third consecutive win, while USC Upstate beat Charleston Southern on the road in a double-header this past Tuesday, winning 7-4 and 6-0.
The Spartans (16-0), currently the top team in the A-Sun, stand in the company of No. 1 Florida (16-0), No. 2 Tennessee (13-0), No. 3 Arizona State (17-0) and No. 5, UCLA (16-0) as one of five teams in the nation to remain unbeaten. In the most recent NFCA/USA Today Poll from Feb. 25, the Spartans earned 44 points to nearly crack the Top 25.
For Jacksonville, Codi Kelly, Victoria Brown and Cecile Gomez lead at the plate, batting .405, .368 and .364, respectively. Kelly is currently on a five-game hitting streak dating back to Feb. 16 against North Carolina, while Gomez has recorded three straight since batting 3-for-3 in Jacksonville’s 8-0 shutout over UIC on Feb. 22.
The Spartans are led on the mound by Anna Miller, who earlier this week was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA co-National Player of the Week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association after tossing two no-hitters in back-to-back starts.
Jacksonville will start against USC Upstate on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. before ending on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Follow live stats here.
