Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Senior Matt Dobbins earned hits third win of the season and junior first baseman Jeremy Gillan set the tone with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to lead the JU baseball team to a 5-3 win over Lipscomb, Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Ken Dugan Field.

JU (13-3, 7-2), which is off to its best start since going 13-3 in 2006, avoided the series sweep by pounding out 11 hits while Dobbins was effective on the mound.

Lipscomb (7-8, 5-4) managed only six hits in the game and left seven runners on base, including a bases-loaded situation with one out in the bottom of the sixth.

"It was important for us to bounce back today," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Dobbins set the tone on the mound and made some big pitches when he got into some trouble in the sixth. Offensively, Gillan's home run was big for us and we managed to get some important insurance runs at the end of the game."

Dobbins (3-0) earned the win after allowing two runs (one earned) with five hits and two walks while tying a career best with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Junior Billy Schlee notched his fifth save of the year after hurling a perfect ninth inning.

Michael Dunn (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts in 7.1 innings.

Gillan led the Dolphins with three RBI while senior center fielder Kevin Ferreira, junior designated hitter Kyle Fleming and freshman left fielder Chris Connelly each finished with multiple hits.

JU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Gillan crushed a three-run homer off the batting cage roof with one out. Ferreira led off the inning with a single to second and then moved to second when Fleming dropped a single into left field. With one out, Gillan sent a 0-1 pitch down the left-field line to tally his second homer of the year.

The Bison finally got their first runner to second base in the bottom of the fifth inning when Channing Brown hit a double down the left-field line with one out but Dobbins ended the threat quickly with strikeouts to Branden CaDavid (swinging) and Ben Williams (looking).

LU cut the margin to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Ryan Wilkins hit an RBI single to left and a run scored on fielder's choice grounder by Justin Sanders. The Bisons still threatened with the bases loaded and only one out but Dobbins got Brown to strikeout swinging and CaDavid to fly out to right to end the inning.

The Dolphins added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth when junior catcher Brad Simmons hit an RBI double and senior shortstop Matt Lopez hit an RBI single. Junior right fielder Thomas Myers led off the inning with a single through the left side and then advanced to second on a ground out to second. Simmons followed with a double into the right-center gap to score Myers. With two outs, Lopez punched a single into right center to plate Simmons.

The Bisons made it 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth when Caleb Joseph hit a solo home run to left center field to lead off the inning.

JU will return to action on Tuesday as it complete its three-game series against Florida International at 6 p.m. in Miami.
