April 18, 2008
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Dolphins ran into the top pitcher in the Atlantic Sun as Richard Bleier allowed one unearned run in his fourth complete game of the season as the JU baseball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 5-1, in Game One of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at John Sessions Stadium.
JU (22-16, 11-11), which had its two-game winning streak snapped, left seven runners on base including a bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning.
FGCU (27-12, 17-5), which is off it first conference loss of the season last weekend (Lipscomb), pounded out five runs on eight hits.
Bleier (6-0) earned the win after allowing only one run (unearned) on six hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.
Senior Matt Dobbins (4-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in six innings. Sophomore Glenn Witkowksi came on late to hurl 2.1 shutout innings in which he struck out four batters.
"Bleier is the top pitcher in the conference but we need to find a way to come up with a big hit," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Florida Gulf Coast is a very good ball club and this second game is going to be huge for us."
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Peacock hit a two-run homer to left center field with two outs.
FGCU increased the advantage to 3-0 in the top of the fifth when Josh Upchurch scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Eagles made it 5-0 in the top of the sixth when Upchurch hit a two-run single to center with two outs and the bases loaded.
FGCU threatened with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh but sophomore Glenn Witkowski entered the contest and got Graig Smith to fly out to right to end the inning.
Lopez led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to third on a throwing error by Bleier as he attempted a pick off at first. In the next at-bat, Bernazard hit a grounder to third to score Lopez.
JU and FGCU will play game two of a doubleheader 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The contest can be followed live on ASun.TV and on GameTracker on JUDolphins.com.
