Baseball drops 8-3 contest to North Florida in the series finale
May 4, 2008
JACKSOVILLE, Fla. - The hits were abundant, including a 4-for-5 effort by senior shortstop Matt Lopez, but not at the right time for the Dolphins as the JU baseball team fell to North Florida, 8-3, Sunday afternoon in the SunTrust River City Rumble series finale at Harmon Stadium.
JU (24-24, 13-17) tallied a game-high 15 hits in the contest but left a runner on base in all but one inning (a game-high 14), had a runner thrown out at the plate in the first inning and grounded into two inning-ending double plays.
UNF (26-20, 15-12) retains the SunTrust River City Rumble Wooden Barrel after jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first three innings and getting a strong pitching performance from starter John Atteo.
"It's not often you have 15 hits in a game and only manage three runs but that's the way it went for us today," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "We had several opportunities to get back into the ballgame but you have to tip your hat to UNF."
Senior Matt Dobbins (4-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout in seven innings of work.
Atteo (5-2) earned the win after allowing only one run on nine hits with a walk and two strikeouts in six innings.
Along with Lopez, who finished 8-for-12 with six RBI in the series, sophomore first baseman Alex Martinez finished 3-for-4 with an RBI to also lead the Dolphin offense. Junior left fielder Kyle Fleming, junior catcher Jeremy Gillan and freshman third baseman Jamaal Hawkins also chipped in with multiple hits.
Chad Knight and Travis Martin each finished with three hits to lead the Ospreys.
The Ospreys took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Preston Hale drove in a run with a grounder to short and Martin hit an RBI single through the right side.
UNF increased the margin to 4-0 in the bottom of the second when a run scored on a fielding error in the outfield and T.J. Thompson hit an RBI grounder to second.
The Ospreys made it 5-0 in the bottom of the third when Martin hit a solo home run to left field.
The Dolphins cut the margin to 5-1 in the top of the fifth when junior right fielder Thomas Myers hit a solo home run to left-center field. For Myers, it was his team leading eighth round tripper of the season.
JU cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the eighth when Lopez hit an RBI single. Sophomore Alex Martinez led off the inning with a single to right and then advanced to second on the play when the ball bounced passed Hale. With one out, Lopez hit a ball back up the middle to score Martinez.
UNF pushed the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the eighth when Andy Warren hit an RBI single, Mike Smith drew a bases-loaded walk and Thompson hit a sacrifice fly to center.
The Dolphins pushed a run across in the top of the ninth when Martinez hit an RBI single. Fleming was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then stole second base. With one out Gillan moved Fleming to third with a single through the left side and then Martinez followed with a chop single through the left side.
JU will begin a four-game non-conference road trip this week beginning with No. 3 Florida State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium. The contest will be broadcast live on 1010XL with Barry Milligan calling all of the action. The game can also be followed on GameTracker on JUDolphins.com.
