MACON, Ga. – For two stellar performances last week, freshman Marcel White has been named the Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
White earned the first A-Sun honor of his young career after leading the Dolphins to a 76-72 victory over Florida A&M on Saturday. In the contest, the versatile combo guard scored 16 points with four rebounds and two assists, each a new career high. He also knocked home three 3-pointers in the game to help JU hold off a late challenge from the Rattlers and earn its second home win of the season.
Hitting 6-of-9 shots from the floor on Monday night, White scored in double-figures for the first time in his collegiate career against Wake Forest out of the ACC. Though the Fins eventually lost 90-83, he finished the evening with 14 points, three boards and a steal, helping Jacksonville erase a 16-point first half deficit and twice lead the Demon Deacons in the second half.
The A-Sun honor is the first of the season for the Dolphins, who won five Newcomer of the Week awards in 2012-13.
White and his teammates return to action tonight at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena at 7 p.m. against the Florida Gators. Individual tickets for the game are still available through Ticketmaster.
