JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Completing the River City sweep, the Jacksonville University women’s basketball team thrashed North Florida by a score of 66-51 on Saturday afternoon. In her first start of the season, senior forward Jade Cargill led JU with a double-double on 24 points and 14 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Queen Alford contributed 18 points and three steals while senior guard Stephanie Edwards added 12 points. Sophomore forward Briona Brown also chipped in with solid numbers on eight points, six boards and two blocks.
Brown put back her own miss for the Dolphins first basket and the Fins put on a show from then on. At 16:17, the Fins pushed to an 8-2 lead which included four points from Cargill.
A few minutes later, Alford increased JU’s lead to 10-5 on a long two and on the following Osprey possession the team forced a shot clock violation on stellar defense (13:49). Edwards’ up and under layin between two UNF defenders lifted the Dolphins to a 10-point lead, 17-7, with 10:31 left in the half.
Destinee Smith pushed the Ospreys over double-digits, 22-11, at 7:14 to kick start the team’s offense. Working the inside allowed UNF to creep within six, 26-20, as Janea Williams used her height to control the paint and collect easy baskets (4:03).Unanswered points from Cargill and Edwards regained the Fins 10-point advantage at 2:05 and neither team made a shot from the floor over the closing minutes as JU entered the locker room with a 30-21 tip.
The crosstown rivals exchanged baskets over the opening minutes of the second frame and by the first media timeout the scoreboard read 37-28. A pair of North Florida free throws closed the gap to eight but Cargill returned the points on the next possession, 40-30, with 12:33 remaining.
A technical foul on JU followed by a one-and-one opportunity brought UNF within six, 40-34 at 11:28. To cut the Osprey momentum, JU ignited on a 5-0 run for space. Cargill posted three points and Alford capped the stretch on a steal and fast break layup, 45-34, at 8:35.
A foul with 5:36 left on the clock put the Fins over the bonus, allowing the Ospreys to shoot two for the remainder of the contest. UNF relied on those makes to close the game as five of their last 11 points came at the line.
On the road to outscoring UNF 19-11 in the final five minutes, the Dolphins showed pizzazz. Fouled on a made behind the back layin, Cargill connected on the ensuing free throw to advance the score to 54-43. On the next play, freshman guard Sherranda Reddick stole the ball and found a racing Alford for the fast break.
In the win, JU improves to 10-11 overall and 7-3 in the Atlantic Sun while UNF falls to 5-15 and 1-9.
