THE GAME

The Jacksonville University women’s basketball team is looking to finish their final regular season road swing a perfect 2-for-2 as they take on USC Upstate on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. For those unable to attend, the action will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.

The all-time series currently sits at a 6-6 stalemate, after the Spartans handed JU its first loss at home on Feb. 1. The Dolphins battled back from 23-down but couldn’t steal the win as they fell by a score of 66-58.

JU’S LAST OUTTING

The Dolphins turned the corner on a four game losing streak with yesterday’s success over East Tennessee State. After the Bucs accumulated its largest lead of the game of seven points, 9-2, with 17:24 remaining, the Dolphins answered with a 7-0 run to tie and the teams traded baskets up through the early goings of the second frame.

JU seized control of the contest with 10:22 to go when a pair of free throws gave the Fins its second lead of the game at 47-45. After ETSU responded to take the lead back, Jacksonville went on an 11-0 surge from the 9:29 to 5:23 marks to pull ahead by 10, 58-48.

The Buccaneers were able to close the gap to four in the final minutes but JU forced turnovers and knocked down crucial free throws to secure the 62-57 win.

JU shot well from the floor at 42 percent which included 4-of-9 makes from downtown. The Fins were also efficient from the free throw line as they knocked down 12-of-16 (75 percent).

Making the most of every opportunity, JU turned 16 ETSU turnovers into 19 points and converted 14 offensive rebounds into 10 second-chance points.

The contest marked JU’s first win of the season when trailing at halftime. The squad has a record of 6-2 when limiting opponents to less than 60 points and 8-2 when shooting between 40-50 percent from the field.
