JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior Shanique Walker will travel to Fairfax, Va. this weekend to compete in the George Mason “Last Chance” Invitational on Sunday, March 2.
The jumper is preparing to race in the 60-meter hurdles prelims at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, in a pool of 25 runners.
“Shanique was unlucky and hit hurdles in her finals last weekend, so we are taking one more shot to run fast enough to make it to the NCAA Championships,” Head Coach Ron Grigg said. “She has done the work and a clean race should deliver the desired result.”
Walker is currently ranked 21st in the country in the 60-meter hurdles after her 8.27 second Atlantic Sun Conference and school record performance on opening day of the 2014 Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships on Feb. 21. Walker eventually placed second in the finals in 8.48 seconds.
At George Mason, Walker is hoping to be one of 16 student-athletes able to compete in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Championships March 14-15.
Also, in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Regional Index released Feb. 24, the track & field team has jumped up five spots to rank 12th in the South Region after earning their ninth consecutive Atlantic Sun Indoor Championship title last weekend. The only ranked Atlantic Sun team, the Fins stand with 58.90 points. Earlier this season, Jacksonville ranked 13th in the index released Feb. 10.
