Women’s Lacrosse Awaits Michigan on Wednesday
Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse welcomes Michigan
to the First Coast on Wednesday, March 5 with a 7 p.m. first draw.
“We are continuing to work on more confidence,” said Head Coach Mindy McCord. “Our team learned they can have more confidence in both our goalkeepers. Mariah [Cudlipp] stepped in and created some fast breaks and our second line mids were dominating. We were so thrilled to be inspired by Nick Hamel as our honorary captain.”
Old Dominion managed the first three scores but the Dolphins quickly took control of the game as they scored seven goals, six consecutively, to hold a 7-4 lead with 16:30 remaining in the first period. Tallying four more goals before the break, the Fins entered the locker room with an 11-6 advantage.
The Dolphins kept running with momentum to start the second half as Ali Brennan and Hannah Wilcox scored back-to-back goals at 27:01 and 26:45, respectively, to put JU further ahead at 13-6. From then on the Monarchs were unable to cut the deficit as the Fins finished the contest scoring seven of the last nine goals.
JU outshot the Lady Monarchs 45-20 and also won the draw control (20-13) and ground ball (33-19) battles.
In net, Asia Moore earned her second win of the season,
saving four and allowing six, while Cudlipp came in for relief, allowing five
and saving two.
Recording her 101st draw control, senior midfielder Chelsea Watts posted three in the 20-11 victory over Old Dominion. She also snatched two ground balls and caused three turnovers. For her efforts she was named the Atlantic Sun’s Defensive Player of the Week.
U-M played its first official game as a varsity program at
Villanova with a 20-7 loss. Sitting at 0-2 on the season, the Wolverines are
backed by 17 total goals with Jess Angerman, Lauren Oberland and Tess Korten
leading the way. Anna Schueler directs the team in draw controls with six while
Oberland and Allison Silber cause the most turnovers.
The Dolphins steam forward on Saturday, March 8 when they take on Longwood at D.B. Milne at 11 a.m.
