JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The last time the Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse team posted a score of 22-8, they defeated Detroit to claim the Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship. Possibly foreshadowing another great season ahead, the Green and Gold repeated the score against Longwood on Saturday.
Ten Dolphins notched a goal in the game and Kaitlin Stewart (Annapolis, Md.) went a perfect 4-for-4 to co-direct the Dolphins in scoring. Taylor McCord (Jacksonville, Fla.) also knocked in four scores to go alongside two assists while Holly Ventimiglia (Medford, N. Y.) and Danielle Della Rocca (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) each added hat tricks.
Less than three minutes into the game, Ali Hoffman (Gambrills, Md.) sent the ball pass the Longwood (1-4) keeper to record the first goal of the game which kicked off a 10-0 run over a ten minute span. The Lancers got on board at 15:38 when Mary Barondess found Kacey Norwood but were already trailing 10-1 at the point. By the half, the Dolphins (4-3) had raced to a 14-3 tip.
Out of the break, Longwood produced a quick goal in the first 1:15 of play but were never really able to find their bearings. Stellar JU defense limited the Lancers to only nine shots in the frame.
Junior Asia Moore (Apex, N.C.) registered one save before handing the reigns over to Mariah Cudlipp (Rochester, N.Y.)who made three saves in the latter 30 minutes.
The Dolphins allowed a season-low 13 shots in the contest and again won the ground ball (22-to-12) and draw control (24-to-8) advantages.
Currently on a three-game winning streak, Jacksonville will look to stamp four in a row when they travel to North Carolina on Sunday, March 16 to face No. 6 Duke. The game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
