Softball Hits and Runs Away with Straight Victories
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University softball combined for 18 runs on 26 hits during Saturday’s double-header against Northern Kentucky, propelling the Fins to back-to-back victories.
The Dolphins beat the Norse 10-2 (5) and 8-1 to improve to 10-10 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic Sun, while NKU falls to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in conference.
In game one, Jacksonville earned 10 runs on 10 hits with nine RBI.
The Fins responded to NKU’s two runs in the top of the first inning with two of its own in the bottom. Karson Tuck’s double to left field scored Victoria Brown, while Emily Sanchez’s groundout plated Codi Kelly. JU then added six runs in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure its 10-2 five-inning victory.
Stephanie Frances opened scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning with a 2-RBI double to left center that scored both Charlie Bradshaw and Cecile Gomez. Kelly then hit a 2-RBI single up the middle that plated both Jackie DiPiazza and Sable Lee, Brown scored on an error by NKU’s catcher, and Sanchez hit an RBI-single to center that brought Kelly home.
In the bottom of the fifth, Gomez wacked her second home run of the season and Bradshaw scored from third base on Frances’s fly out to right field for JU’s final two insurance runs.
Kelly finished 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and one walk, followed by Gomez at 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Brown, Kelly, Gomez and Bradshaw each tallied two runs apiece.
Brown (5-5) fanned four, while allowing only three hits and one walk in 4.1 innings of relief.
In game two, Jacksonville showed strength over the entire field again, scoring eight runs on 16 hits with eight RBI, while Taylor Rossman (1-3) earned a team season-best nine strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work.
The Dolphins racked up four runs in the bottom of the second, two in the bottom of the third, one in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth.
Lexie Ballard opened scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a 3-RBI double to center field that scored Jada Power, Gomez and Adrienne Ramsay, while Frances followed with an RBI single to right that plated Ballard for JU’s 4-0 advantage. In the bottom of the third inning, Ballard’s second RBI double of the game scored Sanchez from second, while Frances’s RBI double to center field in the following at-bat plated Ballard.
NKU responded in the top of the fourth with one run, as Katelyn Roy’s RBI single broke Rossman’s no-hitter and got the Norse on the board.
Jacksonville then recorded one run in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to win 8-1.
Next, Jacksonville will conclude its series against Northern Kentucky on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
