JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a blowout Atlantic Sun series last weekend against Northern Kentucky that saw Jacksonville University softball sweep with 25 runs on 34 hits, JU is preparing to host non-conference Florida International University (FIU) in a double-header this Wednesday, March 12.
The first game is slated for 4:00 p.m. at the JU Softball Complex, with the second to follow at 6:00 p.m. Jacksonville (11-10 overall, 3-3 Atlantic Sun) stands 8-2 on home field.
Wednesday night will be the second time these two teams will compete this season after JU opened its year in Miami Feb. 7-9 in FIU’s Felsberg Memorial Tournament. The Panthers beat the Dolphins 5-3 on opening day.
Codi Kelly, Cecile Gomez and Stephanie Frances lead Jacksonville at the plate, hitting .354, .322 and .320, respectively. Frances led Jacksonville against NKU over the weekend, hitting .667 (6-for-9) while recording one run, three doubles and six RBI. Kelly (.625) and Emily Sanchez (.500) hit for second and third, respectively.
In the circle, sophomore Victoria Brown (5-5) is tied for 13th in the country in shutouts after blanking DePaul (5.0), Maryland (7.0), North Carolina (7.0) and UI-Chicago (5.0) earlier this season in the complete efforts. Brown leads Jacksonville with a 2.61 ERA.
FIU (16-7 overall) stands 0-1 on the road. Most recently the Panthers hosted Charlotte March 8-9 and finished 2-for-3, falling 2-0 in the series-opener before winning the final two games 15-3 and 5-3, respectively.
Stephanie Texeira (.409), Krystal Garcia (.367), Rebekah Sanchez (.364) and Gabby Spallone (.364) lead FIU in batting average, while Cor Jenkins holds the advantage in the circle with an 8-2 record and a 1.74 ERA.
All-time, Jacksonville is 1-4 against FIU.
