Sand Volleyball Falls in 3-2 Decision to UNF

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – The Jacksonville University sand volleyball team suffered a 3-2 loss to North Florida on Friday afternoon in their opening match of the Beach ‘N Boards Fest in Cocoa Beach.

The Jacksonville pairs at No. 1 and No. 3 earned wins on the day, but losses at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 ended the Dolphin hopes. Sammie Strausbaugh and Taylor Nyquist fell behind in the No.1 match with a 26-24 defeat in the first set, but rallied back and took the final two sets by scores of 21-15 and 19-17 for one of JU’s two victories.

The other win was a little bit easier, as Kendall Courtney and Niatha Cullen won in straight sets, 21-14, 21-14.

Playing at No. 2, Jizzian Gesualdo and Gabriela Roman fell by scores of 21-6 and 21-15. UNF also recorded a win at No. 5, knocking off Emily Laskelle and Rachel Miller, 21-9, 21-19. The final blow came at No. 4, where Mayara Prestes and Alyssa Robertson went up a set with a 21-19 victory, only for the Ospreys to recover and win the final two sets, 21-14 and 15-13.

Jacksonville continues the Beach ‘N Boards Fest tomorrow with a trio of matches beginning at 8 a.m. The Dolphins will face Georgia State, Webber International and Stetson on Saturday.
