Women’s Golf in Tie for Third after First Day of Cincinnati Spring Invitational
CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. – A first round team score of 308 has the Jacksonville University women’s golf team in a tie for third place after Friday’s round at the Cincinnati Spring Invitational. Natalie Schmett and Jessica Welch each carded a 3-over par round of 75 on the 6,054-yard layout of the Plantation Inn & Golf Resort.
Schmett and Welch will each go into Saturday’s second round in a tie for 10th place, just three strokes off the pace for medalist honors, currently shared by Christina Langer of Florida Atlantic and Sarah Storandt of North Dakota State University. Those two managed rounds of 72, though their teams are a little further back in the pack.
The third scorer on the day for the Dolphins was Sabrina Rumbaugh, who shot a 5-over 77. Morgan Matchett followed with an 81, and Francesca Yong carded an 82 in her first round of the spring. Megan Collins managed an opening-round score of 83.
Through the first day, Jacksonville is tied with Seton Hall in third at +20. Lynn leads the tournament at +15, with Seminole State in second at +18. Three other schools are within two strokes of JU.
Play resumes tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. for 18 holes, and concludes on Sunday.
