JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The honors keep rolling in for Jessica Welch after her record-setting weekend. After a final-round 66 that was the lowest round of golf in program history, and a 54-hole total of 211 that bested the previous school record by five strokes, Welch was named the Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Week on Wednesday for the first time in her career.
The Cincinnati Spring Invitational started solidly both for Welch and the entire Jacksonville team, as the Dolphins ended the first round in a tie for third with Welch’s 75 tied for the best round on the team. The Dolphins improved their standing in the second round with Welch firing a 70 that was the best round of the day. JU’s total of 293 boosted the team into second place entering the final round.
On Sunday, Welch’s bogey-free round of 66 put her five shots clear of the field and gave the junior her first career tournament title. Not only that, but with solid scores up and down the lineup, the Dolphins ended with a two-under 286 and won the team title by seven strokes over Lynn for their first tournament title in seven seasons.
Jacksonville has this week off, but returns to action on April 7-8 when it hosts the Web.com Intercollegiate at the Marsh Landing Country Club.
