Women’s Rowing Wraps Up Dad Vail Regatta
PHILADELPHIA – The Jacksonville University women’s rowing team began the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River with three boats competing, and after the first day of heats, only the varsity 8 remained. Racing on Saturday morning to try to book a spot in either the grand or petite final later in the day, the Dolphins came up just shy of their goal. A time of 7:00.420 put the team in fifth place in their semifinal, one second behind the UConn boat that was able to move on to the petite final.

“The Dad Vail is always tough competition and the conference was a big win for us and it got us to where we want to be at the end of the season,” said Director of Rowing Jim Mitchell. “This is a good test for us in the middle of that and I think we learned a lot. We weren’t quite as fast as we wanted to be, but we were more or less where we should be at this point in time and I’ll think we’ll get faster as the next couple weeks go along. You have to race fast crews to learn what fast is, and that’s what we did this weekend.”

The other teams that raced for JU on the weekend were the varsity 4 and the second varsity 8. Each fell short of qualifying for Saturday’s races. For the second varsity 8, it was the first time in two months they failed to win.

“I think when you win your conference and you haven’t lost in a couple months, it’s easy to think that you just need to maintain,” Mitchell said. “The thought can be that the team is fast and if they maintain that, they’ll be fine. But fast is a relative term. Now they know they’re not the fastest and we have some extra work to do to improve.”

The Dolphins will conclude their season at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis at the end of the month.
