Dolphins Pick Up Atlantic Sun Postseason Hardware
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After guiding the Jacksonville University track and field team to a ninth straight outdoor title last week for another sweep of the indoor and outdoor seasons, Head Coach Ron Grigg was voted the Women’s Coach of the Year, the Atlantic Sun office announced on Friday, May 23.
Grigg has been voted the Women’s Coach of the Year since 2006; every year since Jacksonville has won the outdoor title.
Also earning Atlantic Sun Track & Field honors, Shanique Walker was named the Women’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete while Samantha Turner was a unanimous decision for the Women’s Most Outstanding Freshman Athlete.
Walker, a junior, was named the MVP at the A-Sun Outdoor Championships last week after tallying 39.5 team points in six events. She won both the 100-meter hurdles (13.40) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.12), earned second in the 100-meter dash (11.85), and ran a leg of the 4x400-meter relay team that placed second in 3:49.45 and a leg of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished third in 47.11. Walker also placed second in the triple jump with 12.17m (39' 11.25") and ninth in the long jump with 5.59m (18' 4.25"). During the outdoor season she was named the A-Sun Women's Outdoor Track Performer of the Week three times (March 26, April 30 and May 14).
Turner, a redshirt-freshman, won the shot put at the A-Sun Outdoor Championships last week with a conference record toss of 14.70m (48' 2.75") besting the previous of 14.32m set by former Dolphin Ronnisha Hall in 2011. Turner also placed second in the discus throw (47,83m, 156' 11"), fourth in the hammer throw with 47.90m (157’ 02”) and 14th in the javelin. During the outdoor season Turner was named the A-Sun Women's Outdoor Field Performer of the Week on April 30.
