Volleyball Defeats Bethune-Cookman 3-0 In Home Opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University volleyball team continued its dominance over in-state rival Bethune-Cookman College when the Dolphins defeated the Wildcats 15-6, 15-3, 15-9, Wednesday night at Swisher Gymnasium.

The win marked the 25th consecutive time JU (2-2) defeated Bethune-Cookman (0-4) since the 1984 season.

Senior outside hitter Brooke Jackson (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led the way with 11 kills while junior setter Carrie Bosworth (Centreville, Mass.) posted a double-double with 23 assists and 13 digs.

Freshman Kelly Ryals (Gainesville, Fla.) also had a solid outing with nine kills and eight digs.

The Dolphin defense held Bethune-Cookman to negative hitting percentages in the first two games while JU hit .296 in game one and .368 in game two.

JU took that momentum into game three and raced out to an 8-2 lead before a furious comeback by the Wildcats. BCC cut the lead to 10-8, but after a Dolphin timeout, JU settled down and won the deciding game by six points.

Shakirah Hudson led the way for Bethune-Cookman with six kills and eight digs. Cortina Hall was next with five kills and six digs.

The Dolphins return to action on Saturday when they play host to Florida A&M at 7:30 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium.
