Dolphins Drop Overtime Decision to Tusculum

Greeneville, Tenn. - Jacksonville's game-tying touchdown and extra point with :47 remaining in the game was not enough as the Dolphins dropped a 42-36 overtime decision to Tusculum (2-9) here Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Dolphins to 3-5 overall and ends their chances for a winning record in 1999.

After falling behind 14-7 after one quarter, JU rallied to take a 22-21 halftime lead. Tusculum evened the game at 29 after three quarters before taking a seven point lead with 7:07 left in the game. JU was unable to score on their first series after the Tusculum touchdown, but a good punt from Brett Keener pinned Tusculum deep in their own end. The Dolphins took advantage of great field position on their next possession, taking over on offense at the Tusculum 17 yard-line with 3:25 to play after freshman Will Weatherford recovered a fumble forced by sophomore Scott Wilson. JU ran five plays before Greg Kannapel ran it in from three yards out to tie the game.

The Dolphins were unable to overcome 301 yards on the ground for Tusculum, as Aaron Clarity recorded a monster day, carrying the ball 34 times for 220 yards and one touchdown. Tyree Booker added two more touchdowns on the ground, and Andy Smith ran it in from the one yard line in overtime to give Tusculum four rushing TDs and the victory.

Jacksonville managed 323 yards of their own, 160 on the ground, and forced six turnovers, committing none, but it was not enough for the Dolphins against the potent Tusculum ground game. Dolphin freshman quarterback Gregg Kannapel went 13-30 on the afternoon for 163 yards and two touchdowns, including his game tying run. Brent Alexander added 85 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Jon Underhill carried the ball 10 time for 50 yards and a touchdown.

JU will closeout their season on Saturday, November 20th at home when they take on Charleston Southern at 1:00 P.M.
