JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In its final tune up before the ASUN Conference Tournament, Jacksonville University beach volleyball team heads to Estero, Fla. this weekend to take on Florida Gulf Coast, who is receiving votes in the latest AVCA poll, and No. 17 Stetson at Estero Community Park.
The Dolphins face the Eagles at 2 p.m. on both Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14, and take on the Hatters at 6 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
Last Time Out – vs. Mercer and Coastal Carolina
Jacksonville finished a doubleheader weekend 3-1 against Mercer and Coastal Carolina last weekend at Dolphin Beach. All four of the Dolphins' matches were decided by a score of 3-2, as JU swept the Bears and Chanticleers last Friday (April 6), and bounced back with a win over Coastal Carolina after they dropped Saturday's opener against Mercer on April 7.
Sophomore Morgan Dees and junior Katie Krawczyk finished 4-0 on the weekend to move to 4-2 as the Dolphins' No. 1 pair. Freshman Shaylee Befus added a 3-1 effort in the No. 4 position on the sand, playing Friday's matches with senior Cristina Finan and Saturday's with freshman Bethany Salapek.
Scouting (RV) Florida Gulf Coast
Coming off a 4-1 win over Webber International this past Tuesday and receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches poll, FGCU brings a 10-8 overall and 4-2 ASUN record into the weekend. The Eagles swept Coastal Carolina and Mercer over the ASUN-opening weekend and only lost two individual matches – both to Mercer. Last weekend, FGCU dropped a pair of matches at Stetson, narrowly missing the upset in match one, 3-2, before getting swept, 5-0, in the second match.
Scouting No. 17 Stetson
Currently ranked 17th in the nation, the Hatters are 23-8 overall and 6-0 against ASUN opponents. The Hatters swept Mercer and Coastal Carolina on ASUN-opening weekend, and only allowed on individual match to fall on the weekend. Stetson also took a mid-week sweep against Florida Gulf Coast on April 4, escaping the first match, 3-2, before sweeping the Eagles in the second match, 5-0. With wins in eight of their last 10 matches, Stetson brings a two-match win streak into the weekend.

The 2018 Dolphin roster is made up of three seniors (Shelby Babowicz, Cristina Finan, and Mackenzie Swan), two juniors (Katie Krawczyk and Lauren Petersen), three sophomores (Morgan Dees, Mallory Mattingly, and Tori Reiser), and five freshmen (Shaylee Befus, Hannah Marchand, Madison Rayam, Bethany Salapek, and Savannah Siegrist).
Where Ya From?
Nine states are represented on the 2018 roster, with Florida as the most widely represented with five players (Shelby Babowicz, Cristina Finan, Katie Krawczyk, Mallory Mattingly, and Tori Reiser). Two players are from Colorado (Shaylee Befus and Mackenzie Swan), while one player is from Alabama (Madison Rayam), Georgia (Morgan Dees), Maryland (Savannah Siegrist), Michigan (Hannah Marchand), Missouri (Lauren Petersen), and North Carolina (Bethany Salapek).
Of the Dolphins' 13 players, eight were also on the indoor roster. Seniors Shelby Babowicz, Cristina Finan, and Mackenzie Swan, junior Lauren Petersen, sophomores Mallory Mattingly and Tori Reiser, and freshmen Hannah Marchand and Madison Rayam helped Jacksonville to an 18-10 record overall and the #2 seed in the ASUN Tournament during the indoor season.
Jacksonville awaits seeding in the upcoming ASUN Tournament, held April 21 and 22 at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Courts on the campus of Stetson University in DeLand, Fla.
