MOREHEAD, Ky. – Quarterback Kade Bell threw six touchdown passes, three in a span of 3:14 in the second and third quarters to lead the Dolphins (5-1, 4-0) to a 45-26 rout of Morehead State (2-4, 1-2) in a Pioneer Football League game on Saturday.
Bell (Fleming Island, Fla.), who was 26 for 42 for 441 yards for the game, got the Jacksonville offense going halfway through the second quarter, with his 50th career touchdown pass, this to senior wide receiver Andrew Robustelli for 7 yards. The score, with 7:39 to play in the half, ended a 13 play, 73-yard drive.
The Dolphins then ignited toward the end of the second quarter and into the third with a trio of touchdown passes.
After stopping MSU on the first drive of the second half, Bell hit Andy Jones on a 20-yard scoring strike with 13:12 to go in the third quarter and a 28-6 lead.
"Give credit to the defense,'' JU coach Kerwin Bell said. "They played great in the first half and kept us in it early. We made some adjustments at halftime and got some people open.''
Bell also hit Jones for 63 yards and Orlando Thomas for 50 yards on his other touchdown passes.
Coach Bell had high praise for his son, quarterback Bell.
"He's a little gamer,'' the coach said. "He struggled early but he hangs in there and doesn't turn the ball over often. I have a lot of faith he's going to make the right decisions.''
The Jacksonville defense stifled Morehead State early and was led by safety Dallas Jackson (Palmetto, Fla.) who had a pair of interceptions, cornerback Armani Sampson (Brandon, Fla.) with one and linebacker DJ Howard (Daytona Beach, Fla.) who had 14 tackles.
Jackson's second pick was a one handed acrobatic affair he didn't realize he caught.
"I didn't know I had it,'' he said. "I looked at my hand and it was there. That interception was a credit to our front seven. They put the pressure on and make them just throw the ball up there.''
- The win was coach Kerwin Bell's (eighth year) 41st in the Pioneer Football League, tying him for second all-time with Rick Ash of Drake (14 years). Mike Kelly of Dayton (15 years) is tops at 55 wins.
- Defensive back Dallas Jackson now has three interceptions for the year, tied for the team lead with freshman Brandon Roe. The team has 14 picks, six more than all last season and two off the school mark of 16.
- The Dolphins have beaten Morehead nine consecutive times and lead the series 10-4.
