Tons to See During Homecoming Weekend

Tons to See During Homecoming Weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- While a football game against Stetson will be the highlight of this year’s Homecoming and Family Weekend, football won’t be the only sport on tap as the campus will play host to 15 contests in less than 48 hours for your enjoyment.

The gala weekend gets under way Friday when the JU volleyball team and women’s soccer team play conference matches at 7 p.m. Volleyball meets Atlantic Sun Conference newcomer New Jersey Institute of Technology at Swisher Gym and soccer goes against Lipscomb at Southern Oak Stadium.

At the same time, softball meets Flagler College in a fall ball game at the Pruitt Softball Complex.

Saturday action begins bright and early with the annual rowing alumni race at 7:30 a.m. at Negarrd Rowing Center followed by the men’s lacrosse alumni game at 10 a.m. on the East Practice Field at the north end of campus.

For land lubbers who like to run, or walk, the first River House Run/Walk 5K begins at 9 a.m. at the River House. Registration currently is under way at either the ju.edu or 1stplacesports.com websites or participants can register on race day beginning at 7 a.m. Parking for the event is free and signs and students will direct runners to the designated parking area once on campus.

At noon, the baseball and softball teams will have their alumni games with baseball playing at John Sessions Stadium and softball at the Pruitt Softball Complex.

At 1 p.m., the JU volleyball team plays host to Lipscomb in an Atlantic Sun battle while the women’s lacrosse alumni game will be at 1:30 p.m. at the East Practice Field.

The gem of the weekend, the Dolphin Pioneer Football League game against Stetson, kicks off at 6 p.m. at D.B. Milne Field and with food trucks, beer carts, bounce houses and more, there will be plenty of activity for fans of all ages.

The game against Stetson isn’t the end of the day’s activity as men’s soccer plays Stetson at 8 p.m. at Southern Oak Stadium.

“Our entire campus is very excited with all the activities going on during Homecoming week and we would love involvement from the entire Jacksonville community,’’ JU Athletic Director Dr. Donnie Horner said. “For athletics, this clearly is the biggest weekend of the fall sports season and we can’t wait to showcase a wide variety of our teams for our fans, alumni and the community at large.’’

Fans should note that a ticket to the football game will get them into the men’s soccer game, however, there will be a $15 charge for the soccer contest for those not ticketed to football.

One window at the football ticket booth will be open beginning at 10 a.m. with the remaining windows opening for business at 4 p.m. when stadium gates at D.B. Milne Field open.

Parking lots for Saturday’s events will be open beginning at 9 a.m. and there will be a $5 charge unless the vehicle has an approved parking pass. EZ eventride will provide shuttles for fans to get around campus throughout the day.

The biggest sports weekend of the fall ends Sunday when at 12:15 p.m. the women’s lacrosse team holds its green and white scrimmage at D.B. Milne Field and at 1 p.m. the women’s soccer team takes on NJIT at Southern Oak.
