Dolphins Look to Conquer Conquistadors on Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University plays its final game before the end of the Fall semester Saturday when the Dolphins (3-7) host Florida National University (10-4) at Swisher Gym. It's the last opportunity for JU fans to see the men's basketball team at home until Dec. 20, when Jacksonville hosts Northern Arizona.

Saturday's game can be seen on ESPN3 and be heard on mixlr.com/judolphins and 1010 XL, the flagship sports radio station of Northeast Florida.

Single-game ticket prices cost $10.00 for general admission, $5.00 for senior citizens and children, and $5.00 per person in groups of 15 or more.

THE LAST TIME OUT – MILWAUKEE – DEC. 5

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Bright performances from JD Notae, Jace Hogan, Jalyn Hinton, Radwan Bakkali, and Devin Harris were almost enough for Jacksonville University (3-7) Tuesday night at home against Milwaukee (6-3), but the Dolphins couldn't quite overcome a slow start to the second half, falling 62-52 to the Panthers.

"We've got to figure out a way to play for 40 minutes," said Head Coach Tony Jasick. "We're struggling with putting two halves together, both offensively and defensively. We just need to keep plugging away each day and getting better. Our spurts of good basketball are getting longer, they're just not long enough."

Coach Jasick vs. Florida National:
1-0

The first win in the Tony Jasick era of Dolphin basketball came on Nov. 16, 2014, in the Dolphins' first home game and second game overall in the 2014-15 season. Andris Misters poured in 22 points, including eight of JU's final nine points in the game, to carry the Dolphins to a 72-61 win over Florida National.

This year the Conquistadors are led by a different coach, James "JJ" Thatcher, in his second year at the helm. Thatcher was no stranger to the program before becoming its head coach though; he came to Florida National as an assistant coach in the 2013-14 season.

Florida National is averaging 82.9 ppg while allowing just 74.5, an average margin of 8.4 points. The Conquistadors shoot 42.7 percent from the floor and 34.1 percent from three while allowing opponents to shoot 43.0 percent overall and 33.2 percent from beyond the arc. Florida National is 10-4 this year after going 13-16 in its first season under Thatcher. The Conquistadors lost their only other matchup so far this season against an NCAA Division 1 team, FIU, 79-61.

Players to watch:

  • #21 – Christopher Hall – Leads the team and is 14th in the USCAA in scoring (15.9 ppg), Hall shoots 44.2 percent from the floor and 36.8 percent from three. He's attempted 87 shots beyond the arc so far this season.
  • #23 – Terrence Johnson – The only Conquistador to start at least 12 games this year, Johnson is second on the team in scoring (15.2 ppg), which ranks 18th in the USCAA. Johnson is second in rebounding on the squad with 6.3 boards a game.
  • #11 – Kenneth Santos – The Conquistador sixth man, Santos has not started a game this year but is scoring an average of 8.5 ppg in just 11.8 minutes a game. He's shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc.
