LakePoint, Ga.- The ASUN Conference announced their selections for weekly awards Monday, and for the third week in a row, a Jacksonville University men's basketball player was honored. For the first time in his Dolphin career, freshman Jalyn Hinton received a conference accolade, winning ASUN Newcomer of the Week for his performance over the last two games.
"We're very happy for Jalyn," said Head Coach Tony Jasick. "Anytime an individual is recognized for their performance it's a compliment to them, their teammates, and our program."
The Boston, Mass. native experienced a week of career milestones, and helped JU secure wins over Trinity Baptist and cross-town rival North Florida. Hinton averaged 19 points and 6.5 rebounds this week, adding three blocks and a trio of assists. In Tuesday's home win over the Eagles, Hinton posted his first-career double-double, putting up 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 105-48 Dolphin win. He followed up the strong performance with a career-high 22 points in a 90-86 victory over the Ospreys, JU's first in five years.
Hinton is the fourth Dolphin recognized by the ASUN with an individual honor this season, joining Devin Harris, Jace Hogan, and JD Notae. He joins Hogan and Notae as a Newcomer of the Week award recipient, contributing even more to the statement that Jacksonville's fresh faces have made on the team this season. Hinton currently leads the conference in field goal percentage, making 58.2 percent of his shots. He currently sits at ninth overall in rebounding in the conference, including second among freshman (6.0 RPG). Additionally, Hinton is third in blocks-per-game (1.0), and sixth in offensive rebounds-per-game (2.1).
Jacksonville looks to stay undefeated in conference play this week, hosting Kennesaw State on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 7:00 p.m., and Lipscomb on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 6:00 p.m.
