SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Two members of the Jacksonville University men's lacrosse team were selected to the Southern Conference Preseason All-Conference Team, and the Dolphins were picked fourth in the Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league Thursday afternoon.
A Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. native and 2018 All-SoCon First Team selection, Applegate led the team last season with 43 points behind 25 goals and 20 assists. After recording an assist in the SoCon Championship against Richmond, Applegate became the third player in program history to reach 100 career points and finished the season tied for fourth in the league with 2.87 points per game. The senior also earned SoCon Offensive Player of the Month accolades in February 2018 and led the league with a pair of man-down goals at Marquette (Feb. 17) and against Mercer (Mar. 17). Defensively, Applegate collected 17 ground balls and caused six turnovers to help the Dolphins finish the season ranked fourth nationally in ground balls per game (33.20).
Selected to both the All-SoCon Second Team and All-Freshman Team last season, Smith quickly proved an elite defender early on. Routinely covering the opposing team's top attackman, the Dallas, Texas native had a breakout game in one of the Dolphins' biggest games of the season as he held then-No. 4 Ohio State's All-American attackman Tre Leclaire scoreless through 59 minutes in the Moe's Lacrosse Classic (Feb. 25). With a team-high 26 caused turnovers and 29 ground balls, Smith finished the season second in the league and 16th nationally with 1.60 ground balls per game to earn national recognition with SB Nation/College Crosse All-Freshman First Team honors.
Despite sending the SoCon Tournament championship game into overtime, the Dolphins were selected fourth in the preseason coaches' poll with 36 points, including one first-place vote, behind reigning SoCon Champions Richmond (48 points, 6 first-place votes), High Point (39 points, 1 first-place vote) and Air Force (37 points).
The Dolphins open the 2019 season on the road at Detroit Mercy on February 2 before returning to Duval for their home opener against Duke on Feb. 9.
