Men’s Rowing Seeks Ninth Consecutive FIRA Title

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - If history repeats itself on Saturday, the Jacksonville University men's rowing program will return home with some hardware. The two-day Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship begins Friday, April 3 and as the defending champion, all eyes will be on the Dolphins as they look to capture their ninth consecutive title.

At last year's regatta, the Dolphins rowed well; all crews finished in the top three while two No. 1 times were recorded in the Freshmen Four and Freshmen Eight races. JU earned the title with 76 total points as it edged the second-place finisher Rollins by 11 points.

"The team's been looking forward to this trip to Sarasota," said Head Coach Marci Robles. "We've only been able to race our top 8 until this point, so it'll be great having the whole team there competing. We had disappointing performances in our first two races of the season, so we're looking to use this regatta as another opportunity to sort through some of the issues we are having. The goal is to execute our race plan to the best of our ability and through that, garner some positive results."

Thus far, the Dolphins' V8 have seen action in  Oklahoma City's Opening Night/Day Regatta and most recently Florida Tech's Governor Cup. In head-to-head competition with FIT, the Varsity Eight crew led by coxswain Stephen McDonald, stoke Victor Gargaun, Scott Waitley, Scott Marx, Nathan Esterline, Luke Myhree, Shane Barnett, Chris Nichols and bow Travis Pulliam finished second with a time of 6.24.1. The host rowed in at first place in 05:59.5.

For the first time this spring season, Coach Robles unveils all her crews for competition in Varsity Eight, Junior Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, Varsity Four "B", Junior Varsity Four and Freshmen Four boats.

Friday's qualifying races start at 3:30 p.m. with the finals starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. The men's first race will be at 4:30 p.m. on April 3 with the F4 taking on Florida, Auburn, Georgia Tech and CFR.
