OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Freshmen Thornton Szynkarski and Cameron Larsson gave Jacksonville University rowing a victory at the SIRA Regatta Championship Saturday, with a time of 8:03.4 in the men's pair 'B' final. The Dolphins took two boats to the meet, and their varsity eight will race in a 'B' final Sunday afternoon.
"I'm proud of the pair's effort today," said Head Coach Marci Robles. "They had a few minor mishaps in the time trial that kept them from having a chance at the 'A' final. They came back in the afternoon ready to fight, and they put together a great piece from start to finish."
Jacksonville's pair qualified for the finals after joining seven other boats that finished their preliminary heat in under seven minutes. With a time of 6:58.3, the Dolphins finished eighth to advance to the next round.
The Dolphins' varsity eight rowed in at 5:21.7, 12th out of 25 boats, in its prelim and finished fourth in its semifinal heat (6:33.8).
"We knew this was going to be a tough race for us," Robles continued. "We were coming off a weekend in N.J. in which we were poorly prepared, physically and mentally. It's a young team but one that is moving in the right direction. Our semi wasn't our best piece, but we know what we need to do tomorrow. The guys are looking forward to having another opportunity to get better. That's the goal."
The men's side resumes action Sunday at 12:54 p.m. with the V8 final.
