JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – We've reached the midway point of the Atlantic Sun schedule. Facing each other for the second time in a week, Jacksonville University women's basketball visits Stetson Saturday at 1 p.m. The Dolphins look to bounce back from their first loss of the calendar year.
JU's Last Outing
In a fight for first place in league standings -- both teams entered the contest with perfect 6-0 records in the A-Sun -- the Dolphins saw their eight-game winning streak snapped at Florida Gulf Coast by a score of 58-39.
Christin Mercer shot 8-for-10 from the floor to direct all scorers with a career-high 19 points.
- The Dolphins went 0-for-9 from beyond the arc, marking their first game this season without a made three-pointer
- JU's four steals matched a season low, and the 23 turnovers committed was its highest in its last nine games
- The last time JU scored less than 40 points was against FGCU on Jan. 17, 2014 (37 points)
End of a Streak
Jacksonville's eight-game winning streak was its third best spell in program history. Set in the 2007-08 season, the team's longest single-season winning streak caps at 10 games.
The Dolphins are still managing nine consecutive wins at Swisher Gymnasium, and put the run on the line against FGCU next Wednesday.
Mercer, a junior transfer from Florida, has made a splash in her inaugural Dolphin campaign. She's a four-time Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week honoree, averaging 11.2 points game on a 53.5 field goal percentage. A game after recording her first career double-double (18 points and 10 rebounds), she recorded a career-high 19 points at FGCU.
She's scored 17 or more points in eight games this season.
Mercer joins Jacksonville after a two-year stint at Florida. As a sophomore, she scored in every game she appeared in for the Gators and thus far has done the same with the Dolphins.
Scouting the Opposition
Extending her double-figure scoring streak to 21 games, Brianti Saunders scored 21 points in the Hatters' 81-61 success over North Florida.
The junior paces all scorers in the Atlantic Sun with 19.5 points per game. Stetson (13-8, 4-3 A-Sun) leads the conference in scoring with 67.4 PPG. At home, the Hatters hold a record of 8-2.
Series: Stetson maintains a 23-14 advantage in the all-time series
Notable: Jacksonville walked away with the victory in the teams' first meeting this season … The 69-49 Dolphin victory was their first over Stetson since the 2010-11 season … Both Mercer and Sherranda Reddick tabbed their first career double-doubles in the game
Jacksonville welcomes the FGCU Eagles to Swisher Gymnasium Wednesday at 7 p.m.
