McCuin Chases Olympic Dreams at CentroBasket Championship

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Just a few years ago, Yolett McPhee-McCuin guided the Bahamian Women's National Team to its first Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) title in 10 years, and in a few days, Jacksonville University's head women's basketball coach returns to her home country for round two.

The five-day CentroBasket Championship begins July 12, and will be hosted in the Virgin Islands. Group A places the Bahamas alongside Mexico, Guatemala, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Jamaica, and an invitation to the prestigious tournament also comes with an opportunity to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

"I am excited about the opportunity to yet again represent my country, and coach against some of the top coaches in the world," said McCuin. "Qualifying for CentroBasket is another step that our national team will need to take in order to pursue our goals of participating in the Olympics one day."

McCuin was announced as the Bahamian head coach in 2012 and joined the Dolphins a year later. She led her home country to a 55-51 victory over Jamaica in the 2015 CentroBasket Championship title game, after outscoring the opposition, 19-8, in the fourth quarter.

The upcoming experience will also see the Dolphins' redshirt-sophomore center Shalonda Neely return to action.

The Freeport, Grand Bahama, native made her international debut in the 2015 tournament, and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds with six points in the gold medal game.

The Bahamas will kick-off its 2017 appearance against Mexico on July 12.
