Dolphins Fall in Tale of Two Halves

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville women's basketball (5-6) played Alabama A&M, who beat North Florida yesterday, on the final day of the UNF Holiday Classic. The Dolphins cruised to an early first half lead, but a rebooted second half Bulldog team battled their way back to a 65-60 defeat of the Dolphins.

Jacksonville pulled out in front with a 6-0 lead, and didn't allow an Alabama A&M field goal in the first four minutes of the contest. They would allow just 15 percent shooting throughout the first quarter. The Dolphins also put together a 10-0 run near the end of the first that gave them a 14-8 lead entering the second.

The start of the second looked as though Jacksonville would begin to run away with this one, as they grew their lead to 22-12. However, the Bulldogs battled their way back by earning 10 free throw attempts during the quarter. Jacksonville's three-point shooting helped them maintain the lead as they converted on 3-of-6, and went into the break with a 31-26 lead.

The Bulldogs continued to battle out of the break, narrowing Jacksonville's lead and eventually taking control of the game with under three minutes to play in the third. Both teams traded buckets, but it was the Bulldogs carrying the single point lead into the fourth quarter after outscoring the Dolphins 17-11.

Again, buckets were traded back and forth throughout the fourth quarter, with Jacksonville unable to get in front. With under three minutes to play, the Bulldogs had grown their lead to eight. Jacksonville had six chances at the free throw line with under a minute remaining, but was only able to convert on two of them. Finally, Jacksonville cut the Bulldog lead to three, but with .3 seconds left it was too little too late.

Jasmyn Brown led all Dolphins with 15 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Trudy Walker achieved her second double-double in two days with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Kiara Meeks and Mariah Batz each scored eight.

Next, Jacksonville travels south to Miami, Fla. to play FIU in their penultimate non-conference game. Jacksonville is 4-3 all-time against the Panthers. The game is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 30 at 2 PM.
