JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville women's basketball (8-6, 1-0 ASUN) grabbed their first conference win of the season Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Lipscomb Bisons (2-12, 0-1 ASUN) by a score of 62-47. After leading by as much as 20, Jacksonville saw the Bisons pull within seven to make it a game during the fourth quarter. However, the Dolphins held it together long enough to collect their third consecutive victory.
The Dolphins came out of the gates with stellar defense, holding the Bisons to just one make on their first six attempts from the floor. Meanwhile, seven of the Dolphins' first eight shots were successful, including a pair of threes that gave them a 10 point lead by the first media timeout. For the quarter, Jacksonville shot 9-of-12 (69.2 percent) from the floor and carried a 22-12 point lead into the second.
Lipscomb looked reenergized at the start of the second quarter, opening with a 6-2 run that cut into Jacksonville's lead. The rest of the quarter, however, looked similar to the first. Jacksonville shot above 50 percent once again, and the Bisons connected on just three shots for a second straight quarter. By the time the two teams entered the locker rooms Jacksonville held a 17 point lead.
Both teams had trouble finding buckets during the third quarter, combining for just six made attempts from the floor. Jacksonville still managed to outscore the Bisons 10-9, and carried a 47-29 lead into the final quarter.
Jacksonville felt their lead begin to slip form the time the fourth quarter got started. The Bisons opened the fourth on a 9-2 run and manage to pull within 7 points of the Dolphins. A three-pointer from Rolanda Hayes helped Jacksonville grow their lead again with just under two minutes remaining, and despite being outscored in the fourth, the 'Phins were able to ride a 62-47 lead to the final buzzer.
The Dolphins were led by Jasmyn Brown, who notched 12 points in her 12th consecutive game in double-figures. Behind Brown was Rolanda Hayes with 11 points. Hayes also sunk three attempts from behind the arc, and has 11 made three-pointers in the last three games. Trudy Walker nearly achieved her fifth double-double of the season, hauling in nine rebounds to go with 10 points. As a group, the Dolphins out-rebounded the Bisons 40-17.
Next, Jacksonville travels to Kennesaw, Ga. to face the Owls (4-10, 0-1 ASUN). Jacksonville has won 12 consecutive matchups with the Owls, who lost their conference opener to NJIT on Saturday. The game is scheduled for Jan. 8 at 7 PM, and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
