CONWAY, S.C. – Attempts at a second-half rally came up short as Jacksonville University (10-5, 7-1) fell to Coastal Carolina University (9-5, 6-1), 12-8, Friday at Brooks Field. The Dolphins ended a 31-game ASUN regular season win streak with the loss.
Jacksonville sprinted out of the gates with quick goals from Rachel Aus and Danielle Della Rocca just 2:06 into the game. However, the host Chanticleers reeled off six unanswered goals. Courtney Genovese and Keri White scored twice to lead CCU, and JU trailed at the half, 6-2.
The second half saw each team score six times. Courtney Valdez hit between the pipes two times to begin the frame. At 24:46, Aus answered a Sophie Crowther goal to cut the deficit to 7-5. Coastal Carolina scored three-straight before Della Rocca buzzed the net at 14:53. Ashtyn Hiron (9:53) and Jaime Chapman (3:35) scored the final two goals for JU.
CCU outshot Jacksonville, 28-23, but JU won 13 of 22 draw controls. The Dolphins picked up 16 ground balls to the Chanticleers' 22, and went 16-18 in clear attempts while holding the visitors to 20-26. CCU had 21 turnovers while JU had 20. Goalie Sydney Matthews had eight saves.
Jacksonville returns to action Sunday at Furman for an ESPN3-televised game.
