DELAND, Fla. – In another convincing ASUN Conference victory – a 19-5 decision at Stetson Friday - the Jacksonville University women's lacrosse team secured a first round bye in the upcoming league tournament and at least a share of the regular season title.
Decisions around the horn will decide if Jacksonville enters the postseason as the No. 1 or No. 2 seed, but either way, the Green and White will play host to the 2017 ASUN Tournament at D.B. Milne Field. First round action begins Thursday at 1 p.m.
"I'm happy for this team and the wonderful people who have made this season so great," exclaimed head coach Mindy McCord. "They have a lot more inside of them and are going to really compete well in the tournament this week.
"I like the way our attack has been working. The team defense is getting better and both of our goalies are playing hot now. There's nothing better than having hot goalies in the postseason."
En route to their fifth straight ASUN regular season title, the Dolphins led Stetson from start to finish.
With eight shots taken, all but two found their way to the back of the net for senior attacker Courtney Valdez who finished the evening with a career-high six goals. The box score also featured senior attackers Jaime Chapman and Danielle Della Rocca who added four and three goals, respectively, while freshman goalkeeper Sydney Matthews picked up the win with seven saves and three goals surrendered in nearly 47 minutes of play.
An individual milestone was also achieved as junior midfielder Ashtyn Hiron surpassed her 100th career point with a goal in the first half. Chapman kicked off the Dolphins' offensive run 14 seconds after the opening draw, and the visitors held a 14-2 advantage at the half.
Jacksonville (12-5, 9-1 ASUN) will claim the regular season title outright if Mercer defeats Coastal Carolina Sunday.
