MACON, Ga. – After helping Jacksonville University to three wins last week – including two against ASUN Conference opponents to remain unbeaten in league play – senior Mackenzie Swan was named ASUN Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
"I am really excited for Mackenzie. It was a great weekend for us as a team and she did a great job anchoring our defensive efforts this weekend," stated Head Coach Julie Darty. "She is doing a great job out there managing all that we are asking her to do, on the floor and off the court. We are putting a lot on her and she is taking all of it and flourishing. I am excited about the way she is playing right now and hope that we can get more of consistent Kenzie as we get deeper into conference play. Big congrats to Kenzie for a well-deserved recognition."
A defensive specialist from Colorado Springs, Colo., Swan posted 53 total digs in the Dolphins trio of victories as JU extended its winning streak to six games. Swan totaled 53 digs during the week, including 21 digs and five assists in a 3-2 battle with Bethune-Cookman last Tuesday evening. She then posted 22 digs last Friday afternoon against Kennesaw State to average 5.50 digs per set to help the Dolphins to a 3-1 win. The following day, Swan added 10 more digs (2.50 digs per set), along with a service ace and two assists, as Jacksonville defeated Lipscomb, 3-1, to close out the weekend. In total, Swan averaged 4.08 digs per set and 4.00 during conference play.
Swan currently ranks third in the ASUN and 86th in the nation with 301 digs. She is also fifth in the league with 4.18 digs per set.
It is Swan's third ASUN Defensive Player of the Week award, after she previously honored twice last season (Oct. 10 & Oct. 17, 2016).
Swan and the Dolphins return to action this weekend when they hit the road to take on Florida Gulf Coast Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m., and Stetson Saturday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.
