Senior forward Richard Blackburn (Jacksonville/Orange Park) scored two goals and assisted on another as the Jacksonville University men's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart, 4-1, in the opening match of the adidas Homestay Inn Classic at UNCW Soccer Stadium in Wilmington, N.C. The Dolphins improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 0-3.
Sophomore forward Tommy Krizanovic (Jacksonville/Englewood) put the Dolphins on top quickly, scoring 27 seconds into the match off a pass from Blackburn. Blackburn then headed in his first goal of the season in the 49th minute off a chip from sophomore midfielder Brett Wagner (Tampa, Fla.). Blackburn put JU ahead, 3-0, in the 65th minute when he scored on a loose ball from inside the penalty box. The Dolphins finished their scoring four minutes later when junior defender Brian Kallman (Woodbury, Minn.) blasted a ball past Pioneer goalkeeper Matthew Weston from the left side. Krizanovic was credited with the assist to gain his second straight three-point performance.
Sacred Heart scored their only goal in the 74th minute on a penalty kick by Andrew Sharp.
JU outshot the Pioneers, 16-8, and the Dolphins took more corners than Sacred Heart, 10-5. Dolphin senior keeper Greg Williams (Hopewell, N.Y.) was credited with the win after tallying three saves in 74 scoreless minutes.
JU takes on Illinois-Chicago at 12 noon Sunday, Sept. 12, to wrap up the adidas Homestay Inn Classic in Wilmington, N.C.
