JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Junior quarterback Chris Horton was named Pioneer
Football League Offensive "Player of the Week" for
the second time this season after leading the
Dolphins to a 28-24 come-from-behind win over
Morehead State on Oct. 21 at Jayne Stadium.
Horton, who connected on 20-of-37 passes for a
career-high 331 yards, tied his program record by
throwing four touchdown passes in the contest. After
taking over the starting spot in the final three games
of 2005, Horton has led the squad to a 5-1 record in
PFL games.
"It was truly a group effort this week with the
blocking of the offensive line and the receivers
catching the ball but Chris certainly had his finest
game of the season," said JU head coach Steve
Gilbert. "He was particularly productive down the
stretch when it counted the most. Not only did he
display accuracy, but he showed tremendous velocity
on Saturday."
Trailing by 11 points with nine minutes remaining, the
Dolphins cut the lead to 24- 21 when Horton hooked
up with freshman receiver Cameron Abdallah for 10
yards. JU took its first lead of the contest when
Horton connected with sophomore Geavon Tribble for
35-yards with 2:45 remaining in the contest. On the
game-winning drive, Horton went 4-for-6 for 57
yards, including a nine-yard rush on third and seven,
as the Dolphins converted on 3-of-3 third-down
conversions.
The selection gives JU its most selections (five) for
the weekly conference honor in program history,
surpassing the previous mark of four in 2003.
Freshman kicker Donovan Curry (ST - Sept. 17),
junior receiver Nate Conner (ST - Sept. 24), Horton
(Off. - Sept. 24) and sophomore corner Robson Noel
(Def. - Oct. 15) round out the previous JU selections
this season.
JU (4-3, 4-1) will look for its most road wins in
program history when the Dolphins conclude their
road schedule at North Greenville on Saturday, Oct.
28, at 7 p.m.
