Box Score MURRAY, Ky. – Freshman forward Kayla Gordon recorded her career first double-double with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds at Murray State on Saturday. While the Jacksonville University women's basketball squad had three finish in double figures, its road struggles continued in the 80-62 decision.
Gordon, the most accurate shooter on the night, went 8-for-10 from the floor in 25 minutes of action while Briona Brown and Sherranda Reddick added 10 points each. Brown also contributed eight rebounds.
Subbed in at the 15:16 mark, Gordon made an immediate impact for the Dolphins with back-to-back baskets. The low-post power moves cut the Dolphin deficit to seven, 14-7, with 14:26 remaining.
While Gordon was a spark for JU off the bench, the opposition was blazing from beyond the arc. Before the midpoint of the contest, MSU had hit seven three-pointers to take a 38-22 advantage at intermission.
Three separate Racers contributed to the fifty percent (7-for-14) three-point effort with two treys each. Murray State led by as much as 24 in the frame until the Dolphins closed the final three minutes on a 9-1 run capped by a Brown three-ball with 21 seconds on the clock.
Jacksonville opened the second half with the ball and Shaleighya Sulton knocked down a midrange jumper seconds later. Five minutes in, the Dolphins closed the gap to 11 on an and-1 opportunity from Kimberly Dawkins.
Working the block and fending off two MSU defenders, Dawkins' layin rattled around the rim before falling in. She later connected on the ensuing free throw to pull the score to 45-34 with 14:35 left. Quickly thwarting JU's momentum, Bianca Babic hit a three from the top of the key and the Racers shot 9-for-11 from the field over the next eight minutes – pacing a 17-point advantage of 70-53 at the 6:09 mark.
From then on, the teams traded points – the Racers using free throws and the Dolphins using layups – until the final horn with JU unable to close the gap further.
